Life is suffering. The app, however, should ideally function as intended. If Dead Souls Daily has failed to deliver your morning dose of misery, or if a technical bug has brought you unintentional distress, please consult the archives below or submit a formal grievance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add the widget?

On iPhone: touch and hold an empty patch of your Home Screen until the icons begin to tremble, tap the +, and search for Dead Souls Daily. Choose your preferred size of sorrow. For the Lock Screen, touch and hold the Lock Screen itself, tap Customise, and place us beneath the clock.

On Android: touch and hold an empty patch of your Home screen, tap Widgets, and look for Dead Souls Daily in the list. Widget offerings vary by launcher and by manufacturer; if we are not yet in your picker, the daily notification will still arrive on time.

On either platform, open the app once after adding the widget so it knows where to begin; thereafter it turns to the new quote at midnight, unbidden.

Since version 1.4, the star on the widget is live: tap it and the quote goes straight into your Saved Sorrows without the app opening at all. The star works for everyone. The widget can show today’s quote, your Saved Sorrows, or a blend of the two. Choosing between them lives under Menu > Home Screen Widget and is part of Unlock the Archive.

I purchased the Archive, but it is locked again.

Digital permanence is an illusion, but we can fix this one. Open the app, tap the Menu icon in the top left, select Archive to open the paywall, and tap "Restore purchases" at the bottom. The store will verify the account you bought it with, your Apple ID on iPhone or your Google account on Android, and return what is yours. A purchase made on one platform cannot be carried across to the other; the stores do not speak to one another, and we cannot make them.

My morning quote did not arrive.

Notifications are fragile things. On iPhone, ensure you have given the app permission in Settings > Dead Souls Daily > Notifications.

On Android, check Settings > Apps > Dead Souls Daily > Notifications. If notifications are permitted but still arrive late or not at all, look under Battery and allow the app to run unrestricted. Aggressive battery optimisation is the usual culprit, and it silences a great deal more than us.

If permissions are in order, open the app and adjust your delivery time under Menu > Settings > Notifications.

How do I read the quote in Russian?

Tap the quote itself, or the Русский control at the top of the screen, and the translation gives way to the original. It works on the daily quote, in the Archive and in Saved Sorrows, and tapping again returns you to the English.

If you would rather not tap every time, open Settings > Reading and set the original as your default. Reading the Russian, and the part-and-chapter sources that come with it, is part of Unlock the Archive.

Can I request a specific author?

You may request them, yes. Whether we heed your request is another matter entirely. Submit your literary desires via the form below.
